The BACnet International BACnet Testing Laboratory Working Group invites manufacturers of BACnet products to attend the 2008 Interoperability Workshop October 7-9, 2008 at the Crowne Plaza in St. Paul, Minnesota.  This is the ninth annual BACnet Interoperability Workshop and is hosted this year by Trane

This event permits vendors to test their BACnet products in a neutral and friendly environment with BACnet devices from other vendors.  Last year more than 100 BACnet engineers representing 34 companies attended the workshop and improved their BACnet implementations and testing methods.  Click here to view a list of past participants.

The event will begin on Tuesday afternoon to allow for arrival on Monday and setup Tuesday morning.  The testing starts at 12:30 pm and continues through Thursday afternoon.

Format

Test Sessions:
The one-on-one testing sessions are designed to allow each team to test their products with individual company products in scheduled sessions.  We will have 1 hour and 2 hour sessions during the workshop.  Pairings will be assigned by the BTL based on vendor availability and vendor preferences.

Training Sessions (Day 2)
Possible training sessions include:

BTL Test Package Review
This session will review all of the materials used to prepare your device for submission to the BTL lab.  We will include tips on how to get your device through testing quicker and therefore saving you time and money.

BITS and Python Training
This session will introduce you to the testing tool BITS and its scripting language Python.  Learn how to write test scripts to speed testing of your device.  It is recommended that each team that signs up for this session bring a laptop for hands on experience.

Interoperability Design Choices
This session, given by an experienced BACnet implementer, will provide hints and tips on developing and improving your own BACnet product.   You will review and discuss items in the BTL Implementer's Guide as well as questions from the participants.

New BACnet Features Discussion

This session, given by an experienced BACnet implementer, will provide information on the new services and objects being added to the BACnet standard.

Operator Workstation Testing Requirements Discussion
This session, given by an experienced member of the BTL-WG, will provide information on the new requirements and testing procedures available for workstation testing.

Round Table (Day 2 and Day 3)
There will be one round table available on day 2 and day 3 of the workshop.  This table is available to teams who wish to have unscheduled testing with other vendors who may be participating in the round table.  Please indicate on your application form when you plan to attend the round table so that you are not scheduled for a Test Session.

Schedule

There will be a BTL-WG meeting on Monday prior to the workshop (located at Trane St. Paul Facility).  If you would like to attend the working group meeting please email the BTL Manager prior to October 7.

Who May Attend

Workshop participants should be very familiar with the software and hardware that implements the capabilities being tested and are expected to have a good understanding of the BACnet protocol.  The Workshop will be open only to active participants.

We can accommodate a maximum of 100 participants for this workshop.

Test Teams

Each company may bring one or two testing teams, with a maximum of two people per team at any particular time.  Exceptions may be granted at the discretion of the BTL Manager.  If the number of people planning to attend the workshop exceeds the space available, BACnet International Corporate members (Platinum, Gold and Silver)  will have priority.

Legal Terms of Participation

The purpose of the workshop is to identify interoperability problems in BACnet products and the BACnet Standard, and this requires an environment in which the participants feel comfortable discussing product functionality.  Many participants will bring unreleased products, and other participants are expected to respect their privacy.  All participants agree to keep confidential for a period of one year, any information about other companies’ products obtained primarily as a result of their participation in the workshop.  The BTL will collect information on interoperability problems identified during the Workshop, and that information may be discussed among the participants in the BTL’s testing activities for purposes that are consistent with the charter of the BTL.  All participants agree that the Workshop is not a forum for discussions related to sales, marketing, business development, distribution, or any related matters.

What to Bring

Bring all materials you think would be needed for your testing and connecting to other vendors’ equipment.  Some suggested items include Ethernet cables (straight-through and cross), Ethernet hubs, power extension cords, power strips, hand tools, portable oscilloscopes, BACnet protocol analyzers, and BACnet Routers.  It is expected that the interconnection of different vendors’ equipment will be done primarily using BACnet/Ethernet or BACnet-IP/Ethernet, but some vendors will want to test communication using MSTP, ARCNET, or PTP.  If you do not have a BACnet router or other device that will permit your equipment to connect to a BACnet/Ethernet or BACnet/IP network, please contact the BTL Manager.
